What is Aluminium and Why is it Used in Deodorants?
A little physics session for ya’ll! Aluminium is the most abundant metal found in the earth’s crust. We use it for many things such as car parts, soft drink cans, saucepans and pots etc. Aluminium occurs naturally in low levels in many foods and even the water we drink! It is used in anti-perspirants specifically as it is able to block sweat ducts, therefore reducing the amount of sweat we produce.
What is the difference between a deodorant and an Anti-Perspirant?
I suppose it is important to mention that deodorants and anti-perspirants are not the same and have different goals:
- Deodorants’ main task is to neutralise body odour, yet still allow the body to sweat.
- Anti-perspirants main goal is to block sweat ducts.
Most true deodorants don’t contain aluminium, however many anti-perspirants are marketed as deodorants and this is where you can be misled.

There are many claims that Aluminium can cause breast cancer however there hasn’t been enough evidence to distinguish whether that is truly the case. It is well known that a build up of aluminium in our body can have toxic effects, including interfering with our hormones. This natural, cruelty-free deodorant is one of the most reliable for 24 hour coverage. My husband uses this and after a sweaty gym session he doesn’t have to worry about any odour when he’s wearing Weleda.
