Let’s talk low libido’s!
There can be many causes of low sex drive and I’m here to tell you that its okay and there’s many treatments that you can try. Approximately 40% of women experience sexual dysfunction over their lifetime, so its more common then you think! Us women are complex creatures and accordingly so, the steps involved in increasing libido are very individual and depend heavily on identifying what’s causing this lack of energy or excitement in the bedroom!
Some of the common culprits are:
- Hormonal changes
- Stress
- Medications
- Cultural or psychological challenges
- Pain during intercourse
Its important to identify what are the major causes so that the correct strategies can be implemented to improve your sex drive.
In a study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, it found that one of the most effective treatments for low libido is having a healthy lifestyle. Stress management was also a major factor and the treatments used in the study included mindfulness, exercise & yoga.
Personally, coming off the pill created all sorts of hormonal changes which effected my libido greatly. It’s important to eat well and take the necessary supplements in order to correct your hormones that are out of wack. I recommend seeing a naturopath who specializes in women’s health for the best results!
If you don’t have the money for a naturopath (no judgement sister, we’ve all been there!) I would highly recommend reading Dr. Jolene Brighten’s book “Beyond the Pill” for so many amazing tips on how to boost your libido especially after coming off the pill! I’ll pop the link to purchase below.
Dr. Brighten advises to include healthy fats and vegetables in your diet such as dark chocolate, pumpkin seeds, garlic, oysters, pineapple and avocado to balance your hormones and boost your libido.
Finally, after analysing the parts of your life that you can have a direct influence on (ie. diet, exercise) – talk with your partner about your struggles and allow them to help you find ways to combat your low sex drive. You may find that it could be a lot of fun along the way!
